How is Testosterone Produced?

In men testosterone is produced mainly by the Leydig cells in the testes and to a much lesser degree their adrenal glands.

Women make the majority of their testosterone in their adrenal glands.

Testosterone in men is the result of a complex series of hormonal events called the Hypothalamic Pituitary Gonadal Axis (HPG) that starts in the hypothalamus which is situated in the base of the brain.

The hypothalamus releases a hormone called gonadtrophin releasing hormone (GnRH). This is passed to another gland situated just below called the pituitary gland.

The presence of GnRH stimulates the pituitary gland into producing and releasing two other hormones called FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing hormone)

These are passed down towards the Leydig cells in the testes. Once LH reaches the cells, it triggers the production of testosterone, where it is released into the blood stream.

Testosterone levels and T boosting
The influence of testosterone

Why Do We Need Testosterone?

Testosterone is responsible for the development of the male sex organs before birth.

During puberty its levels increase dramatically to help develop our secondary sexual characteristics including our deeper voices, growth of body and facial hair, increased penis and testes size and many other manly attributes. (moods, aggression, confidence)

It also plays a key role in the maintenance of sex drive, sperm production, motility and volume. It can control body fat distribution, the production of red blood cells along with the development and maintenance of muscle mass and strength.

A key 2008 study also linked healthy testosterone levels to the prevention of osteoporosis in men.

Women also need testosterone but to a far lesser degree than men. Science tell us that women have on average between 5-10% of the amount of testosterone found in men.

In healthy adult males, normal testosterone levels in the blood should be between 300ng.dl and 1000ng.dl.

Women have far less with normal blood levels reading between 15ng.dl and 70ng.dl.

Naturally Boost Testosterone

Testosterone Is A Steroid Hormone

All Hormones are classified by their make up or structure. For instance Insulin and growth hormones are peptide hormones which are made from chains of amino acids

Testosterone and other steroid hormones (including Estrogen, Progestins, and Glucocorticoids) are made directly from cholesterol.

Cholesterol is one of the main precursors to testosterone, and is changed in the leydig cells before it is eventually released as testosterone.

First it is turned into pregnenolone by exposure to an enzyme called cytochrome p450. It is then changed again into androstenedione before finally converting into testosterone.

Testosterone And Your Cells

Testosterone is the key male hormone and as such has a direct influence over certain cellular processes. It acts as a chemical messenger to the cells.

It can actually reach every cell in the body, but can only have any influence or effect on those with androgen receptors.

Once testosterone is traveling around the body in the blood stream, it is grabbed by these androgen receptors

These are proteins that take hold of testosterone and pulls it into certain cells. This process is called SHAFF (steroid hormone activated transcription factor)

Cells containing androgen receptors include those found in the liver, prostate, skeletal muscle and the central nervous system.

Once within the cell, it enters the nucleus and activates certain genes within. It binds to your DNA in a process called Hormone Response Element (testosterone is a hormone) which allows it to regulate and make certain changes to your genes.

This can mean kickstarting events such as increased hair growth, boosting muscle mass and strength, improving sexual responses, and also regulating moods and even our behaviour.

Increasing Muscle Mass

As an androgenic hormone Testosterone has a direct role in the regulating of and the increasing of muscle mass, it is also key to our body’s response to exercise.

This is how it works:

Lifting weights or in fact any strenuous exercise can trigger muscle growth by causing small amounts of trauma or tears to the muscle fibers themselves.

As a direct response to this stimulus the body reacts by repairing the damaged muscle tissue, and adds new protein strands to the muscle fibres to strengthen and gradually enlarge the muscles.

This is a process known as protein synthesis which is controlled by a number of hormones, with testosterone being the most influential. This is the primary function of a testosterone booster.

The Testosterone Effect On Muscle Growth

Boosting Testosterone has a direct influence on muscle growth by binding to the receptors situated on the muscle cells.

Once attached, it increases the biological signals running through the muscle tissue that promote protein synthesis.

As this increases new muscle fibers are formed in the muscle cells, these add bulk resulting in muscle growth and increased strength.

The constant act of repeatedly tearing and repairing muscle fibers by exercising means that men (and women) who workout can build larger muscles, and gain more strength.

Increases to testosterone levels also helps to boost the levels of another key sex hormone – Growth Hormone, which is another main player in the boosting of protein synthesis and ultimately increasing muscle bulk.

By boosting protein synthesis in skeletal muscle, it is testosterone’s influence that increases just how quickly muscles will adapt and change to regular exercise.

By increasing other key factors including encouraging the release of growth hormone, it has an all encompassing effect on every aspect of protein synthesis.

The end results is improved muscularity, more strength and faster recovery from working out.

The Testosterone Effect And Sex Drive

Being the main male sex hormone, testosterone boosting is also responsible for our sexual development, the growth of our sex organs and the subsequent ongoing regulation and maintenance of our sexual responses, fertility and sperm quality, motility and volume.

It is also linked to erection strength, and sexual performance

During puberty and right through into our early 30’s, most men have high sex drives and can get erections and have sex virtually on demand.

As we start to get that little bit older, our natural levels of testosterone start to reduce – Experts tell us that on average, we lose around 1-2% of our natural testosterone production each year. This is the androgenic hormone.

At first the effects are hardly noticeable , but as the years go by, we will usually start to see some effects that are being caused by our reducing hormone levels.

By the time a man reached 50 years old, his testosterone levels could be some 35-40% lower than it was in his 20’s. This where testosterone boosters are needed.

Erections might be weaker, or not last very long.

Ejaculations not as intense and we produce less amounts of semen

We may not feel like sex, or really struggle to get ‘in the mood. It is definitely time for a testosterone booster.

Low T Levels
When T boosters are required

Signs Of Low Testosterone

Low testosterone is usually diagnosed in men when blood test results reveal a testosterone/blood reading of below 300ng.dl.

Officially called hypogonadism, it can lead to some quite unpleasant and annoying symptoms that can include:

  • Lack of sex drive
  • Poor or non existent erections
  • The appearance of man boobs (aka gynecomastia)
  • Reduced sperm count
  • Increased fat around the belly
  • Reduced muscle tone and strength
  • Lack of energy
  • Smaller testicles
  • Poor moods
  • Reduced sleep quality
  • Bones become weaker and prone to fractures

There are arguments between medical professionals about exactly WHEN a man has low testosterone, some men can function very well on testosterone levels below 300ng.dl, while others struggle with levels well over the 300ng.dl mark.

Its effects do vary from man to man, and for this reason, doctors do not just act on blood test results.

If you are experimenting a number of the above symptoms as well, this is a clear indication that you could have low T.

There are of course other reasons why for instance a man might have erectile dysfunction for instance,  stress or nerve and blood disorders could cause erection problems.

What About High Testosterone?

It’s not normally a real problem in men, those who have higher than normal testosterone levels do tend to be more assertive, dominant, confident and possibly ‘over sexed’.

However it is a problem in some women. If their levels of testosterone rise above the normal levels they can experience certain problems such as irregular menstrual cycles, a deepening of the voice and increased growth of body and facial hair. They can also develop deeper voices and become more dominant.

Women who are suffering from a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome are generally found to have higher than normal levels of testosterone, this can also cause female infertility.

The Role Of Estrogen In Men

Just as women have and need testosterone, men need a small amount of estrogen in their body too.

It actually plays an important part in mens health. If you have too little, you could be at risk of developing osteoporosis and an increased risk of bone fractures.

If you have slightly too much Estrogen, you could be twice as likely to have a stroke and certainly more at risk of developing coronary artery disease.

Men who have too much Estrogen are also thought to be at a greater risk of getting an enlarged prostate and the developing of prostate cancer, especially if blood levels of free testosterone is on the low side at the same time.

Men produce Estrogen through a process known as aromatase, a process where testosterone in the blood is transformed into Estrogen.

It can be made in the liver, the brain as well as in muscle and fat cells. The latter is a major concern as putting on weight is more likely as you get older, and obesity is a major trigger for increased estrogen production.

As estrogen levels rise and aromatase activity increases, it can effectively take over and start to reduce testosterone levels even further.

This can increase the effects of age related testosterone decline even further, causing an even greater reduction in energy levels, libido and erectile function. It can also cause thinning hair, mood changes and add to the levels of body fat.

Its important to make sure that the levels of both hormones are kept at the right balance. there are both drug based and natural treatments that can help maintain both estrogen and testosterone levels.

Foods That Reduce Testosterone Production

There are a number of common foodstuffs that are really detrimental to testosterone production. Here are a few of the main ones that you really should be avoiding:

Licorice

A popular sweet tasting food that is made using the root of the glycyrrhiza glabra plant. It is packed with a highly bioactive chemical called glycyrrhizin acid.

Popular in food flavourings, candy, alcoholic drinks, some herbal teas and even things like breath fresheners. It can also be used in some medications.

However popular and tasty it is, the sad clinical facts are that it has been proven in a clinical trial to reduce testosterone by as much as 40%.

This was not a fluke either, subsequent studies have replicated the results with some dramatic reductions in testosterone being cased by a relatively small amount of glycyrrhizic being taken. ( one man saw his testosterone levels drop from 740ng.dl to 414ng.dl).

Another study saw a group of men eat 7g of licorice daily for 7 days. Their testosterone levels dropped by an average of 26%

Alcohol

It’s a hard one this, as most of us like a drink from time to time. Now the odd tipple will not do any harm, but if you reach for the bottle on a regular basis, your testosterone is definitely going to take a hit.

The key component in alcohol is Ethanol, this is known to be an effective nervous system depressant, it slows our bodies reactions and functions down. It’s also highly calorific and basically toxic to our endocrine system.

Clinical studies have shown that when we drink to excess, our testosterone proaction suffers directly. One key study saw a group of men drink 1.75g of alcohol per kg of body weight ( enough to make sure they were intoxicated).

Their testosterone levels were checked before and after the drinking session and it was discovered that their testosterone production dropped dramatically and did not return to its normal levels for over 24 hours.

Soda

Who doesn’t like a can of soda, especially when the weather is hot and sunny? But as we all know w many are crammed with sugar (some have up to 8-10 tea spoonfuls in one can) that can have some far reaching health consequences.

Studies have show that drinking these regularly can increase calorie consumption by up to 17% which will cause weight gain.

Gaining weight is a key reason why many men start to experience low testosterone, additional body fat increases the levels of estrogen in the body which as i mentioned above is really detrimental to testosterone production.

Not only that, its the fast route to type 2 diabetes, not forgetting potential heart problems too.

Fast Food

The fast food business is massive, in the US alone its worth clearly over $5 Billion.

It’s the same worldwide.

In these modern times, with everybody living fast paced lives means that more and more of this highly calorific food that is saturated in sugar, bad fats and with little or no nutritional value is being consumed on a daily basis.

Hot dogs, burgers, Pizza and fried chicken are the main culprits, but you should also include shakes, candies, cakes and biscuits under the same umbrella

Its little wonder that obesity is one of the greatest threats to our health and lives today.

Scientific studies have proven that men who regularly eat junk or fast foods have lower testosterone production.

One particular study that caught my eye involved over 8000 test subjects noted that regular eating of junk food exposed men to a chemical that is known to reduce testosterone.

This chemical is called phthalates – Bisphenol A (BPA) is a classic example, it is found in many fast food containers.

This and other chemicals have been proven to reduce testosterone by a staggering 30%

Vegetable Oils

Commonly used in cooking, many Vegetable oils are very high in Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA).

These have been linked to the development of certain metabolic and inflammatory diseases including: High Cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome), Cardiovascular problems an even certain types of Cancer.

Studies have shown that oils such as canola, safflower and soybean oil often contain refined ingredients that can contribute to male infertility by reducing sperm motility, reducing testosterone production and lowering testicular function.

Foods That Boost Testosterone – Best Testosterone Boosters

Just as there are foods that you should avoid, there are foodstuffs that if included in your diet are very effective at helping to raise testosterone production. Changing your diet is one of the best testosterone boosters.

These include:

Brussel Sprouts

Packed with a compound called Indole-3-carbinol (DIM for short) this is know for its ability to help reduce the aromatase process where testosterone is transformed into estrogen.

Studies have proven that eating a diet with good levels of DIM can cut estrogen by up to 50%

Point to note – DIM is also found in Spinach, Kale and Broccoli. This food group is one the best testosterone boosters to introduce to your diet.

Chia Seeds

Highly Androgenic – popular in ancient tribal cultures for their ability to boost libido and energy. Modern day studies have confirmed their testosterone boosting effects

Lean Red Meat

Bit controversial this one because most dietary experts try and tell us to reduce the amount of red meat we eat. It is however packed with vitamins and minerals, in particular zinc which has solid testosterone boosting properties. It is known to help boost fertility, maintaining sperm count and motility.

Blueberries

Very high in Calcium-D-Glucarate and Resveratrol. The later has proven t-boosting and excellent anti-oxidant effects, the former is known for its ability to reduce estrogen build up.

Bananas

The old bodybuilders favourite, they are packed with bromelian (which is also found in pineapples). Well recognised for its ability to boost testosterone

Onions

Studies involving animals have shown that eating onions can cause noticeable increases in testosterone production. There are no human studies as of yet, but all scientific evidence points to them being just as effective in humans.

Pomegranate

A favourite with bodybuilders anyway, a powerful source of nitric oxide which boosts blood flow. This is great not just for muscle building and energy but its also is excellent at boosting erection strength and longevity.

This is a problem often experienced by men with low T.

One study recorded an increase in testosterone of up to 21%

Water Melon

Packed with a compound called citrulline malate  – an effective vasodilator rather like pomegranate that opens blood vessels, boosts blood flow and improves cases of erectile dysfunction. Its a well known fact that increased sexual activity is great for testosterone production and boosting low T levels.

Oyster

Not everybody likes them or can even eat them due to seafood allergies ,but they are one of natures highest sources of zinc – essential for fertility, sperm motility and testosterone boosting

Oats

Contains a high level of saponins, these help to stimulate the pituitary gland, triggering the increased production of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) which is direct precursor to testosterone production in the Leydig cells.

Pure Dark Chocolate

Yes you read this right – chocolate in its purest form, dark, bitter and strong is really high in magnesium, arginine, zinc and manganese which are all essential for testosterone boosting. They can also help clean and widen the arteries, boosting blood flow and improving erection quality.

Treating Low Testosterone

If you are experiencing some of the symptoms listed above, and have had a blood test that shows lower than normal testosterone levels the two combined generally prove that your testosterone production needs a lift.

Your doctor might well recommend a course of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)

These involve putting man made or synthetic testosterone into the body to bolster the shortfall, and can be carried out by a number of methods.

  • Injections – carried out weekly, sometimes monthly, synthetic hormone is injected straight into into the blood stream.
  • Patches – sticking plasters impregnated with synthetic testosterone are attached to the skin – usually the shoulders, lower back or abdomen. The testosterone in the plasters is passed gradually through the skin and into the bloodstream.
  • Tablets – there are two types, ones that are swallowed and those that are placed under the tongue or between the teeth and lips and allowed to dissolve, delivering the testosterone directly through the blood vessels in the mouth.
  • Implants – tiny testosterone impregnated pellets are implanted under the skin, they gradually dissolve allowing testosterone to pass into the blood stream.
  • Creams and Gels – Topically applied to the skin, passes testosterone directly through the skin and into the blood stream.

Risks Of Drug Based TRT

Although effective for many men, the one thing that links all the above treatment options together is the very real risk of side effects.

Some can be quite unpleasant and others potentially life changing, even fatal.

There is a good reason for this

The testosterone being put into the body is man made and genetically foreign to your body. This means that your body may not tolerate it and may react badly in direct response to the drug. It might possibly even reject it as it would a transplanted organ.

In the US, there are hundreds of lawsuits currently being heard in the courts that have been brought by men who after using some of these methods have experienced serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.

They claim that the manufacturers of these drug based treatments knew about the potential risks but failed to pass the information onto the public and the medical community.

There have already been some huge compensation payouts being ordered by the courts with some men receiving over $140million.

TRT is not just risky for the patients themselves. A problem that has reared its head, mainly with topically applied treatments such as gels and creams is the very risk of secondary exposure.

if child or a woman partner came into direct contact with the skin on and around the application area it could cause some worrying problems.

Women who have been exposed to the testosterone in the creams and gels have developed the symptoms of high testosterone mentioned above (increased body and facial hair growth, deeper voices and menstrual problems).

More worrying is the effect it can have on children with cases of premature puberty, excessive clitoral growth in young girls, bone problems, increased aggression and behavioural problems being reported.

The general advice to any users of topically applied testosterone treatments is to make sure that the application area is covered up at all times and to avoid all cases of skin to skin contact.

Clenbuterol delivery method and dosing
Testosterone boosters and Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic Steroids

If you are a keen gym goer then its almost a certain fact that you have met or know someone who takes anabolic steroids to boost their testosterone levels and grow larger, sometimes huge muscles.

There is no doubting the fact that they can provide some outstanding results, by forcing man made, synthetic  testosterone and other key hormones in to you body they can really deliver insane increases in muscle mass, and strength.

Using anabolic steroids is one of the best testosterone boosters – but at what cost?

However…

They are now illegal for good reason – nowadays you can only get them from a doctor under strict medical supervision and a prescription, OR you can buy them on the black market online.

The World Doping Association (WADA) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) have banned then for use in competitions.

Why?

They can case some really nasty side effects, some even worse than drug based TRT.

Users have experienced anything from increased acne and bad moods/tempers (AKA ‘Roid Rage’) through to increased red blood cell count, elevated blood pressure, kidney and liver damage, increased risk of stroke and heart attacks.

Users can also experience a drop in libido and shrunken testicles.

When women take them it can also cause other problems alongside those listed above that include menstrual problems, clitoral growth to a point that it resembles a small penis, they can lose their breasts, and gain male attributes such as body and facial hair and deeper voices.

Taking Anabolic steroids also cause another problem, it shuts down your natural hormonal producing processes.

Coming off them requires a careful process of something called PCT (Post Cycle Therapy) which tries to kickstart the natural production of hormones like testosterone and growth hormone once again.

Best ingredients for workout supplements
Natural T Boosters

Natural Testosterone Booster Supplements

What Ingredients are usually found in the best testosterone boosters?

The best option is without any doubt a good quality natural testosterone booster.

These are supplements that have been scientifically formulated using clinically approved ingredients including Vitamins, Minerals, selected Amino acids and Herbal extracts.

They work in a different way to drug based TRT and Anabolic steroids, but do provide similar results.

Instead of forcing synthetic hormones into the body, they work to enhance and nurture the hormonal environment in the body in order to encourage it to start making more of its own natural testosterone.

The natural testosterone being produced is genetically matched to the body and as such will not cause any adverse reactions or side effects.

Instead it builds in the blood stream and travels to the receptor cells helping the body to increase its muscle size, strength, and boost things like moods, sleep quality and of course libido.

Results gained from using a natural testosterone booster might take a little longer than when using anabolic steroids for instance, but the ongoing health benefits and overall well being greatly outweighs the false and risky results caused when taking illegals steroids.

The best testosterone boosters use clinically approved ingredients that normally include most of these clinically proven compounds

What To Look For In A Natural Testosterone Booster

The first thing to recommend is that you avoid any product that uses a proprietary blend in its formula.

These are regretfully all too common in the supplement industry. Manufacturers can take advantage of a loophole in law that permits them to group ingredients together in a total blend (also called complex or matrix).

In doing that they are then only legally obliged to list the names of the ingredients, but DO NOT have to reveal the amounts of each key ingredient in the dose.

All they have to also state is ‘daily value not established’ to qualify.

This allows some unscrupulous manufacturers to use just trace (tiny) amounts of key ingredients, enough to allow them to state that they are in the formula, but not enough for the ingredient to have any effect.

This practice often means that you the end user are buying products that are weakly formulated and ineffective, leaving you feeling disappointed, frustrated and out of pocket financially.

At the same time, the manufactures profits grow as putting tiny amounts of expensive key ingredients in the mix, saves them manufacturing costs.

Bottom line on this subject, never take a supplement that uses proprietary blends or any other undisclosed group of ingredients, they makers usually have something to hide, and that is often that the formula is too weak to have any real effect.

The best manufacturers are those that clearly list the full details of their formula, with these you know exactly what you are putting into your body and what benefits you should expect.

Cash Back Guarantees

Another thing that we suggest that you look for is the provision of a cash back guarantee – these are supplied by reputable manufacturers who actually care about their customers.

By giving you a select period of time (30-90 days are commonplace) to take and experience the effects of the product first hand they will then accept returns of the empty and unopened bottles.

They will usually refund your purchase price (but not shipping costs which is the industry norm) if you are unhappy with the results and effects of the supplement.

These guarantees are a sign of a manufacturer who cares deeply about their customers and who truly believe in their product – again, if you find a T-booster with no cash back guarantee – leave well alone!.

Finally – The Formula

Ingredients are king! – get them wrong, to fail to put enough of the right ingredients in the mix and all you will be left with failure and feelings of disappointment.

Look at our Ingredient list above and make sure that any product that you look at contains decent amounts of many of the ingredients listed.

These are the ones that have solid clinical evidence that backs up the makers claims for effective testosterone boosting – there are hundreds of ingredients out there that do not work, so use this list as your definitive guide.

The doses of Essential Vitamin D3 and D-Aspartic Acid are amongst the most potent of any T-booster.

The inclusion of Oyster extract is a masterstroke by the makers.

What Do Users Say About Testofuel

What Do Users Say About Testofuel?

Reports from users across the world is one of large gains in muscle mass, strength and energy levels.

Users also report some good reductions in excess body fat, along with a very welcome increase in sex drive and performance.

From my own perspective, I took Testofuel as part of my review process.

It took around 7 days or so for me to see or feel any effects.

At first I started to experience increased energy, which helped improve the amount of work I could do in the gym.

At the end of the second week I started to see some increases in my personal bests –

For instance I had struggled to improve my bench press, having been stuck at 62kg for what seemed like weeks.

I managed to increase it to 74kg – a fantastic jump in my lifting ability. I also saw great gains in my deadlift, shoulder press and other compound moves.

My muscles are now more defined, and certainly noticeably bigger. I look and feel great.

Does Testofuel Cause Any Side Effects?

There has been no side effects reported from any users of Testofuel. I certainly didn’t feel any ill effects myself either.

The one thing to point out is that if you have any allergy to shellfish, then Testofuel may not be for you, this is due to the presence of the oyster extract in the formula.
